Brothers Kyle and Todd Holton credit their father Roy for instilling strong Christian values in them as children.

Now at ages 43 and 48, respectively, they believe that strong faith has helped their family-owned business thrive.

"Without that, we might have been another lumberyard by the wayside," said Todd Holton, vice president of Spring Arbor Lumber & Home Center.

After being in business for 50 years, Spring Arbor Lumber plans to stay in business for many years to come.

"It's an honor that we've been able to do that, Lord willing," said Kyle Holton, the store's president.

Located at 7700 Spring Arbor Road, the business sells hardware, tools and materials for home needs - such as cabinets, doors and windows - as well as outdoor projects such as roofing, siding and building homes, decks and porches. They also provide material estimates, contractor referrals, delivery service and more.

"We try to provide a big ear to the customers and what they want," Kyle Holton said. "We pride ourselves on quality and getting the best-quality lumber we can get.

At age 25, Roy Holton opened Spring Arbor Lumber in early 1960. He purchased the business - previously Houghtby's Lumber and Coal Co., located on Teft Road - from William Houghtby that year.

Holton started working for Houghtby part-time in 1953 while attending what was then Spring Arbor Junior College. After graduating with an associate's degree in business in 1955, he started full-time at the lumberyard. Holton moved the business in 1964 with $5,000 worth of inventory.

Now at age 75, Roy, married to wife Joann, stills shows up to work every day, Todd said.

Employee Bob Delamarter, 75, has worked at Spring Arbor Lumber for about 50 years. "I know a lot of people, and I try to take care of them properly," he said. "Over the years, you just get to know people."

Having a strong customer base and being involved in the community has also helped the business over the years, the brothers said. However, they always put God first.

"It's only by the grace of God we're still open," Todd Holton said.
